Just got back from the Street scene in San Diego! It's a great
festival-especially if you like very large crowds! The tribute to Jimi
Hendrix happened at the Ford Stage which is the biggest venue area
within the festival site. By the time the concert started which was
around seven thousands of Hendrix fans had gathered close to the stage!
Guitarist Eric Gale started the show joined by another guitar player who
was hot! they did a killer version of Who Knows! Later after a couple of
more songs the rhythm section of Double Trouble came on and one of the
songs they played was "Little Wing" which was awesome! what was even
more awesome was when Billy Cox and Buddy Miles took the stage! Plus
they were playing through a huge sound system which seemed to augment
Cox's simply brilliant bass playing! The guy tore it up! "Freedom" sang
by Billy Cox was a dream come true! Billy played that little riff at the
beginning that sets the song off and Mr. Miles proved that he is big in
more ways than one with some excellent drumming. Freedom was hot! some
of the people that jammed I don't know but I do know Cesar Rojas and
David Hildago from Los Lobos! they kicked ass and did so on a few songs!
During Machine Gun it was just Billy, Buddy, and Mike Mc Creedy from
Pearl Jam. this in my opinion was the best song from the whole concert.
you had to be there to believe it! I'll never forget this! Machine gun
was awesome! Just the way that Buddy Miles looked at Billy as they were
so in synch with what they were doing! at this point Billy was
shredding! Mike Mc Creedy is awesome! when I looked over the crowd
during Mike's extended solo I realized that Jimi is so loved! Mike did
some hot feedback and just played the song so well! Incredible! This
crowd was in a frenzy! then they played "All Along the Watchtower". That
song jammed too with Los Lobos jamming! then again Cox and Miles
dominant! the end was "Voodoo child" a long extended hot jam in which
all the guitar players extended themselves! That was it! Afterwards I
took a tour of the Hendrix Red house Bus which was parked nearby. they
had on display Jimi's butterfly outfit from Isle Of wight and also his
Indian jacket with the blue buttons from Rainbow Bridge! I couldn't
believe the excellent condition his clothes were in! Plus in the bus
there was a movie of Jimi at the Isle Of Wight. The songs sounded
excellent in there! people were cheering Jimi!

Actually i played all along the watchtower with Buddy and Billy with Andy Aledort on guitar and Jim on harp. I also smashed my left handed Fender Stratocaster at the end on the tune and handed the body and neck to the fans up front the stage. Los Lobos was not on the stage during all along the watchtower played during this Hendrix concert. Although your right that it was a good jam. How could you forget me....? Ray Spitzer guitarist and vocalist on All Along The Watchtower San Diego Sept. 2001 I also have a tape with photos of this perforance to back this fact up...
